Mission
The Department of Fine Arts prepares art teachers for grades PreK-12; prepares students for professional careers in graphic design, illustration, commercial photography and sequential arts; provides service courses for other departments; and provides outreach services for surrounding schools and communities. In addition, the Department of Fine Arts provides exhibits, cultural events and other programs to promote the arts and make the University, and general community, artistically and musically richer.
Objectives
Students completing the Art Education degree will:

Have the facility to understand and appreciate art, its meaning, and contribution to the individual and society in cultures, both past and present.

Create, critically analyze, and evaluate works of art in a wide variety of media.
-
Demonstrate an understanding of the developmental stages of art through which children and adolescents pass.

Develop, organize, evaluate, and effectively deliver developmentally appropriate art education curriculum in grades PreK-12.

Demonstrate a working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions that are unique to studio work.
Students completing the Applied Design degree will demonstrate the ability to:

Operate and manage a small business in commercial photography, graphic design, illustration, or sequential arts.

Work as a commercial photographer, including proficiency in portraiture, shooting on location, photojournalism, landscape/nature, and high fashion.

Manipulate, retouch, and alter photographic images for commercial applications.
-
Work at management level positions in the applied design field.

Create dynamic sequential art images for sale and publication.
-
Integrate conventional illustrations with high tech digital illustrations.

Demonstrate mastery of computer software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom, Dreamweaver, and Flash.

Prepare layouts for newsletters, brochures, magazines, and newspapers.
General Program Requirements
The admission of students to the undergraduate programs in the Department of Fine Arts is based upon the general admission requirements of the University. No portfolio is required.
