Digital Media Studies


The Digital Media Studies Minor is for English majors and students in major programs of study outside the Department of English and Modern Languages. The Digital Media Studies Minor is designed to satisfy the varied interests of students who seek careers in radio, television, public relations, journalism, social media, and/or other digital outlets. Students will focus on both content creation and product delivery, tailoring their minors to suit their individualized needs. This broadly-based minor is reflective of the expanding and encompassing field of communications studies in the 21st century. Students who major in English or other programs of study can minor in Digital Media Studies by completing 18 credit hours from the list of courses below. The specifications are as follows:

Career Opportunities

Employment prospects in Digital Media Studies are wide ranging in a digital age where global information is a critical commodity. Communication experts are highly sought after in private industry, at academic institutions, and throughout all levels of government. The Digital Media Studies Minor provides students with specific skills and concepts required for careers in radio, television, and other media related fields. Depending on course selection, students are prepared to engage in a variety of occupations including, but not limited to, broadcast news reporting, radio and television program creation and delivery, the production of commercial and promotional messaging, computer-generated graphic design, and social media distribution. Particular emphasis is placed on experiential learning which may include participation in campus radio and television productions and/or multiple internships. In this way, students are able to discover which area of the communication industry is the best fit for their talents.

Minor Requirements


Any sequence of 18 semester hours, chosen from the list below, meets the numerical requirement for the minor in Digital Media Studies. Departmental internships may be earned in 3 credit increments (3, 6, 9, or 12 credits), but no combination of academic internships may exceed a total of 12 credits. A grade of “C” or better is required in each course to meet the requirements for the Digital Media Studies minor. The following courses are the only Digital Media Studies courses that a student may take to meet the 18 semester hour requirement for the Digital Media Studies minor:
