The Upper Division Certificate (UDC) in Career and Technology Education (CTE) is a 12-credit certificate that has been designed for individuals interested in teaching CTE at the middle school and/or high school level. The PBC in CTE courses were developed based on established Code of Maryland (COMAR) regulations for Professional Technical Education (PTE) teaching certification. The courses focus on four topics: a) planning, delivering, and assessing CTE instruction, b) managing an effective CTE classroom/laboratory and minimizing risk, c) differentiating instruction to accommodate the needs of all students in CTE classes, and d) providing reading, writing, and mathematics literacy instruction relevant to the career area. In addition to the four courses in this PBC, students must meet the requirements specified in COMAR if they wish to receive their PTE teaching certification from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). Students must meet all university undergraduate admissions requirements and receive a grade of B or better in each course. The PBC is ideal for those who previously worked in industry or a CTE related field and are currently teaching in a Maryland school system with a conditional certificate. The PBC in CTE is designed to help career and technology educators with conditional certification complete the requirements for PTE teaching certification from MSDE.
